How does the torque converter transmission work?

A torque converter is a key component in an automatic transmission system. It performs the same function as a clutch in a manual transmission — transferring power from the engine to the transmission — but does it automatically and smoothly.

1. Pump (Impeller) – Connected to the engine; it pushes transmission fluid into the turbine.

2. Turbine – Connected to the transmission input shaft; it receives fluid pressure from the pump.

3. Stator – Sits between the pump and turbine; it redirects the fluid to improve efficiency.

4. Transmission Fluid – Transfers power through hydraulic pressure.

1. When the engine is running and the car is in gear, the pump spins and moves fluid to the turbine.

2. The fluid hits the turbine blades, causing the turbine to spin — this sends power to the transmission.

3. The stator redirects the fluid back to the pump to boost torque and reduce energy loss.

4. As the vehicle speeds up, the torque converter gradually “locks up” to reduce slippage and improve fuel efficiency.
